BRAIN SCAN

BRAIN SCAN

Scanning the Brain - What Is a Brain Scan, Anyway?
It's an exciting time in the study of the human brain and mind. Nary a week goes by that doesn't see a new discovery in the fields of neuroscience and psychiatry, giving new insight into human mental phenomena and mechanisms.

Much of this advance in knowledge is the result of technological advances in brain imaging. It seems that almost every time one hears about some neurological experiment or advance in human neuroscience, the term "brain scan" appears.

Here are the 6 commonly used techniques:

Near infrared spectroscopy

Magnetoencephalography

Electroencephalography

Positron Emission Tomography

Computed tomography

Functional magnetic resonance imaging

In this image one color is used for each of the six scans, can you figure which is which?
